Bali’s Penglipuran village is awarded as the 3 top cleanest village in the world besides Giethoorn village in Belanda, and Mawlynnong in India. The village is located in Bangli regency, one of the nine regency in Bali.  When you travel from Denpasar, about one hour and a half (45 kilometers) to the Bangli regency.  The  Penglipuran village is a traditional village which has their own character, belong to the district Kubu- Sub district Kubu and untouchable by modernization lifestyle.  It’s located at the height of 700 meters above the sea level as giving the fact the fresh air and cooler weather than southern Bali island.  It is very pleasant to walk around the clean village.
The Penglipuran’s panorama, it’s clean village, and its unique culture attracts a lot of visitors from all over the world. The place is also easy to reach from the neighboring tourist area, and the village is not far from the coolness of Kintamani, Tampaksiring and Tirta Empul (Gianyar Regency).

History:
The name of the Penglipuran village, according to the mythology of the elders of Penglipuran village, came from the word “Pengeling Pura” (remember your temple), it literally  means remember your ancestors from the Bayung Gede.   This mythology was connected with the movement of their ancestors from the Bayung Gede village at Kintamani to become permanent residents at Penglipuran village along with their culture and traditional lifestyle.
The village administration is very simple, it consists of a custom village with one Banjar and administration is very easy to manage.

The Balinese traditional houses which are divided into two parts, the west and east of single rod. All the houses have the same form of the front. This section is made of dirt material for walls and bamboo for the roof. The front of the house has angkul-angkul or gate which functioned as a building guard. At the special religious ceremony, this section will be a place of offerings and is used as a place to worship God and ancestors.

The houses were lined from top to bottom from the top of the hill. Among the houses have a very clean village street.  Mostly Village roads are quite, but it will be more people on the road in the afternoon when people go home from their work day, and  some mingle with their neighbors to socialize.  The main road stretching from north to south are not made of asphalt, but from the rock mountain that is modified into paving or stone ConBlock.
The Village territory is divided into three parts called the Tri Mandala. In the north corner of the village there is a shrine (the main theater), namely Pura Bale Agung (Upgrading), which became the main place of Balinese Hindu ceremony. Furthermore, in the middle there are parks and residential homes.

In the lowest part of the village, there is a cemetery complex (Setra). The concept of the Tri Mandala does not only apply to village spatial layout, but also for residential each home.  Each house also follows the concept of the Tri Mandala.  On the front part of buildings, there are buildings angkul-angkul or gate and empty space called Natah in the middle part; the center is the family gathering place, and at the very back there is a toilet.

Don't forget to visit Bamboo forest near the village

Hi travelers,

The kite festival is  one of Bali’s major provincial calendar highlights, also presentations of unique cultural scenes in the summer in several locations on the island.  The history behind of the making kite is started in the agrarian harvest season in Bali’s rice fields by young people to thank God (Betari  Sri) for the abundant rice paddies and other crops.  This event was born from the fun of the   Balinese ritual in rice field to become a competitive event on the island by the communal Banjar.”  Each Banjar community sends their  Sekaa Layangan or youth kite teams to the festival with their artistic creations.  The groups from hundreds of  banjar will compete in the Kite festival each year.  The competition features new creation kites, which is you may see detailed three-dimensional figures like Hindu Gods, cars, motorbikes, traditional boats, airplanes, and mascots also a brand of the sponsors of the event.

The Balinese people love “rame,” means  festive, so each group of kite presentation will be accompanied by the Gamelan orchestra to add the joy and spirit to each kite they present also adding the dramatic art story when take-off and landing time to the kite.   This year expecting  over 1,200 kites in this competition and up to 10,000 spectators.

Photo The Kite Festival

The Balinese traditional kites are gigantic and measuring up to four meters in width and 10 meters in length. Some other versions, such as the ‘layangan Janggan ’ type have impressive flowing ribbon tails often reaching 100 meters or more in length.

The Nusa Penida is one of the three virgin islands in Bali

General Information about Nusa Penida Island
Video By: Wonderful nusa penida

Many travelers don’t know about Bali island is also has three smaller islands (called: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan).  If you are a traveler who loves  nature, adventure, marine life, and enjoys being in the quiet atmosphere, you should go to visit one of these islands.  Nusa Penida is a very interesting island.  I have been visiting this place many times.  For me, I  love to spend my times in the cave temple for meditation with family and friends and spend the night at healing temples.

Some visitors said, “Nusa Penida is how Bali looked like before all those tourists.” There are not many garbage, clean beach, nice people, and this place is still virgin.  By saying virgin, it means: the roads are very narrow and many dirt roads.  Mostly use cash to pay for your food and accomodation, and souvenirs. No GPS system works on this island.

If you are a solo traveler, you should mingle with locals around the beaches and villages.  Maybe you can pay the local travel guide or ride a motorbike to explore the island.  Since the street signs are not very clear, it is more difficult to navigate by yourself.  The best thing is, when you arrive at the hotel you ask the hotel’s staff for help.  The price of accommodation and food here is cheaper compared to the main Bali island.  If you try to take public transport, unfortunately is limited. There are supposed to be Bemos (small minibus) along the north coast.

There are 3 ATM machines at Sampalan.
There is one modern gas station in Sampalam and another closer to Toyapakeh, both considerably cheaper.

“Nusa Penida is an island located on the southeast of Bali and serves as the largest island on Bali's southeastern coast after Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.”

The island is known as a bird sanctuary alongside neighboring Lembongan and Ceningan islands and particularly popular for its diving sites.
This island full of hidden treasures, likes: an area called Angels Billabong, a natural pool of turquoise color in between limestone cliffs, that comes right out to the open water. “The terrace-like pool overlooks the entire bay and when there is a swell the water comes right up into the air over the terrace wall.”  You also don’t want to miss Manta Point, Broken Beach, Seganing Waterfall, Goa Giri Putri temple, Dalem Ped temple, and the Gunung Cening Temple.

Total Area of Nusa Penida including Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan is 202.840 hectares Administratively it consist of 16 villages and 79 Banjars (social community). Total population 47.448 people.

Here are 8 interesting places to visit in the Nusa Penida island:
Photo Nusa Penida

1. Peguyangan Waterfall, Nusa Penida

The waterfall here is a series of short, cascading spring fountains that eventually make their way over a steep ravine and into the sea.  Unlike normal waterfall you have ever seen.
Away from the ravine, the cascades where people can go to enjoy a ‘natural spa’, and getting a massage from the fast flowing waters as they hang out at the shallow pools.  This is so fun experience.
To get to this heaven, you need to go down narrow stairs against the wall of the ravine. Around 460 steps with the gorgeous sight of the cascades are both amazing and unbelievable views.

To visit Peguyangan, you need to make arrangement with a tour guide who is  knowledgeable about Nusa Penida (tour operator in Nusa Penida), or hire a private driver on the island who knows how to find this place.

2. The Angel’s Billabong
Photo Nusa Penida

A spectacular natural infinity pool.  Yes, the Angel’s Billabong pool  is a breathtaking place to visit.  The green floors of this particular infinity pool are so comfortable to walk on foot (not slippery).

Warning: Do note that Angel’s Billabong can be dangerous. There have been people swept out to the ocean by waves rushing in!

Address: Banjar Sumpang, Desa Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida

How to get there: It’s not too far from Pasih Uwug (the broken sea). A half-kilometer walk from Manta Point to a nearby reef, climb down one of the sides of the edgy coral walls to swim in this magical pool.

3. The Nusa Penida Tree House (Rumah Pohon Batu Molenteng)

The Treehouse was built with a ladder.  When you climb up to the beautiful Tree House, and you look out of the Atuh beach view and spectacular landscape of this island

Rumah Pohon Batu Molenteng
Address: Banjar Pelilit, Desa Pejukutan, Nusa Penida
Price: Rp.5000 (USD $.030) per entry, Rp.5000 parking fees

4. The Smoke beach (Pasih Andus)

Where the waves meet the rock.  The location is not too far from Angel’s Billabong.  Here you can witness a magical nature phenomenon.
On the top of the cliff where the rock breaks the wave and jets the water into the air…Spectacular and magical!
“Just watching the water burst into immense height pumps a bit of adrenaline into your veins and makes you realize how powerful the ocean can be. The water stays there for a while, listen to the rumbling sound of the sea, and if you dare, take a picture with the huge waves behind you.” traveler

Location: Sakti, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771.

5. The Tembeling Beach, Nusa Penida

Photo Nusa Penida

For Balinese, this beach is the Nusa Penida’s sacred spot.  “The legend tells that this beach and the sacred water pool in the forest were discovered by a pregnant woman who was chasing a cow.”
The locals used this place for ceremonial purposes and source of drinking water.

At the present time, this place has become a place for a hidden swim spot.
FYI: The big pool is for men and the small one for women only.

Location of Tembeling Beach: Batukandik, Nusapenida, Klungkung, Kabupaten Klungkung, Bali 80771.

6. The Temple Point, Nusa Penida (the under water temple)
Photo nice tour Bali

This is an exciting place to visit! The huge Buddha statue and others smaller statues were put under water as an art exhibition, an attraction for visitors and for conservation of the reefs.
How to get there? Book a snorkelling boat trip from Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida.

7. The Banah Cliffs
Photo Nusa Penida

One of the cliff is about hundreds of meters high and draped in lush green vegetation, This Cliff is probably the most dramatic coastal cliffs in Bali. This is a most astonishing sight viewed by boat.

This beach is located in remote areas, and the destruction of this region to attract visitors. Especially the panorama of the beach is stunning and there are not many visitors here.

More info about Bali: Bali Travel Info

Dear Travelers,

If you are planning to spend your vacation on the Bali island this summer, you don’t want to miss this event.  The Tanah Lot Art and Food Festival will be organized by Tabanan regency as an international event.  The organizer invites local and foreign visitors to come and enjoy the entertainment (dance and music) and the authentic Balinese food.
For those of you have never had any Balinese cuisine, this event will take you on the taste Balinese old day food and you won’t find the food in the tourist area very often.
The event features the potential artists and chefs in 23 customary villages across Kediri subdistrict.  You will taste the very traditional  cuisine, art, and culture of Tabanan regency.  The organizers are hoping this festival will attract many visitors, so it will be held annually.

During the three- day festival, the visitors will enjoy several menus of Balinese cuisine, such as:
-The Sup Ares (soup of young banana trunk) as appetizer, Lawar Kuwir as main course and Laklak Biu or Laklak Pisang/ Banana Laklak as a dessert.

- The Rebung Tabah (bamboo sprouts) processed into a delicious soup as an appetizer, Nasi Lawar Rebung Tabah as the main course and Jaja Batun Bedil as the dessert.

- The Balinese Chicken in combination with mango, Dadar Gulung Mangga as an appetizer, Ayam Bakar Sambal Mango as the main course and Fried Banana combined with mango as dessert.

-The  Kuwir Nyatnyat, Bebek Rajang of Tabanan typicality served with Es Yeh Telabah drink.
Timbungan and Be Guling will be combined with Tuak Manis Ice. Lawar Gedebong Bungkil Biyu Batu (processed from stony banana corn) and Leak Coffee of Tabanan served with Pisang Goreng Rangda and others.

According to Bali Travel News, “ the theme of the festival is Luhuring Segara Rasa Lan Raksa which means the sea as an energy center to realize a cultured individual. The theme aims to explore about the sea that becomes the excellence of Tanah Lot as well as provide energy for our lives.”
The event organizer mentioned that “the Tanah Lot Art and Food Festival is implemented in an effort to always maintain and preserve Balinese arts and culture, especially in Tabanan district.”

About the Tanah Lot temple: The Tanah Lot temple is the Sea temple.  The location is in the Tabanan regency 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Denpasar, the temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide.  Based on the history, the Tanah Lot temple was built in the 16th-century by a priest from Java, Dang Hyang Nirarrtha and helper of  local fishermen.  The priest’s vision that the location was a sacred place.  This temple has been a hugely popular tourist destination for decades.   For the Balinese, “Pura Tanah Lot is one of the most important and venerated sea temples. Like Pura Luhur Ulu Watu, at the tip of the southern Bukit Peninsula, and Pura Rambut Siwi to the west, it is closely associated with the Majapahit priest Nirartha. It’s said that each of the sea temples was intended to be within sight of the next, so they formed a chain along Bali’s south western coast – from Pura Tanah Lot you can usually see the cliff top site of Pura Ulu Watu far to the south, and the long sweep of the sea shore west to Perancak, near Negara.”

What to bring?

1      Sarong and scarf: Wear a sarong and scarf/sash to visit temple

When the visitors are entering any Balinese Hindu temple on the Bali island requires both men and women to cover their legs below the knee by wearing a sarong. The Sarongs also can  be hired at the popular temples, together with the sash that should be worn around the waist.  I would recommend you should always have your own Sarong and scarf when travel in Bali because some temples don’t provide them.

Have a wonderful trip!
