Hi
travelers,
The kite festival is one of Bali’s major provincial calendar highlights, also presentations of unique cultural scenes in the summer in several locations on
the island. The history behind of the making
kite is started in the agrarian harvest season in Bali’s rice fields by young
people to thank God (Betari Sri) for the
abundant rice paddies and other crops. This event was born from the fun of the Balinese ritual in rice field to become a competitive event on the
island by the communal Banjar.” Each
Banjar community sends their Sekaa Layangan or youth kite teams to
the festival with their artistic creations.
The groups from hundreds of banjar will compete in the Kite festival
each year. The competition features new
creation kites, which is you may see detailed three-dimensional figures like
Hindu Gods, cars, motorbikes, traditional boats, airplanes, and mascots also a brand
of the sponsors of the event.
The Balinese people love “rame,” means festive, so each group of kite presentation will be accompanied by the Gamelan orchestra to add the joy and spirit to each kite they present also adding the dramatic art story when take-off and landing time to the kite. This year expecting over 1,200 kites in this competition and up to 10,000 spectators.

The Balinese traditional kites are gigantic and measuring up to four meters in width and 10 meters in length. Some other versions, such as the ‘layangan Janggan ’ type have impressive flowing ribbon tails often reaching 100 meters or more in length.
The
lightweight fabrics with selected colors for the body of a kite and some are
fitted with intricately carved heads. The final results await to transport –
usually by truck and requiring special escort along small Balinese roads to the
main location of the Bali Kites Festival flying grounds on Padanggalak
Beach where the high wind is perfect for the giant kite.
